Berar

Area in Maharashtra state, west-central India, which covers the Purna River valley, a major cotton-growing region. It has been in five different states since 1900, and since 1956 has been part of Madhya Pradesh.

The kingdom of Berar was founded in 1484, one of five Muslim kingdoms of the Deccan. It became part of the Mogul empire in 1572. In the 17th century it was taken by the Marathas, and leased to Britain by the Nizam of Hyderabad in 1902.
