Berdichev (or Berdychiv)

City in western Ukraine, 48 km/30 mi south of Zhitomir; population (2001 est) 90,100. Industries include engineering and food processing.

The famous division fought in the Civil, Finnish and Great Patriotic wars; throughout its post-war history the 24th mechanized Samara-Ul'yanovsk, Berdichev Iron division that has also acquired the name of Prince Daniil of Galich remained one of the best units of the Armed Forces of Russia and Ukraine.
