Berezniki

City in the Perm oblast (region) of the Russian Federation; population (1996 est) 183,000. Berezniki is situated on the left bank of the River Kama in the foothills of the Ural Mountains. It is one of the chief industrial centres of the Urals, with a vast chemical combine that processes local sodium, potassium, and magnesium salts. Paper is also manufactured here.

Berezniki was founded in 1883 as a sodium plant on the site of a former (16th-century) salt works. It was made a city in 1932 by the amalgamation of several older towns.
