Berganza, Teresa (1935– )

Spanish mezzo-soprano. She made her debut at Aix in 1957, as Dorabella, and sang at Glyndebourne in 1958, as Cherubino, and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1960, as Rosina. In 1976 she appeared with the La Scala Company as Cenerentola. Her US debut was in 1958, in Dallas, and she sang at the New York Metropolitan Opera House from 1967. She performed in Edinburgh in 1977 as Carmen. Her other roles include Isabella, Octavia, and Cesti's Orontea; she sang Carmen in Paris in 1989, and in Madrid in 1991. She was also successful in song recitals.
