Bergen op Zoom

Fishing port in the province of North Brabant, southwest Netherlands, at the junction of the East Schelde and Zoom rivers; population (2006 est) 65,800. The local economy is dependent on the sugar industry, asparagus trade, oyster fisheries, and chemicals, cigarette, and precision goods production.

In the 15th century the town's importance relied on its cloth trade and fisheries.
