Berger, Arthur

Berger, Arthur (1912–2003)

US composer. He studied with Walter Piston at Harvard University, with Pirro, Pierre Lalo, and Paul Valéry at the Sorbonne in Paris, and composition with Nadia Boulanger; later influences included Milton Babbitt and Anton Webern. He became music editor of the New York Sun.

Works

Chamber

Slow Dance for strings; serenade for chamber orchestra (1944); three pieces for string quartet; wind quartet; two movements for violin and cello.

Other

ballet Entertainment Piece and other works for piano; Words for Music Perhaps (Yeats) and other songs.
