Berger, Victor Louis (1860-1929)

Austrian-born socialist, journalist, and US representative. Berger emigrated to the USA in 1878, and from 1892 onwards he dedicated himself to writing about and promoting socialist politics, labour unions, and reform movements. A co-founder of the Social Democrat Party in 1898, he owned several newspapers, through which he spread a moderate socialist message. From 1911 he served as the first socialist in the House of Representatives, serving another three terms after World War I.
