Berglund, Paavo (1929– )

Finnish conductor. After an early career as a violinist, he co-founded the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra in 1953. He was principal conductor of the Helsinki Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1962 and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra 1975–79. He has conducted the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra from 1964 and was music director 1972–79; he is associated with the revival of Sibelius's early Kullervo Symphony. He has been principal guest conductor of the Scottish National Orchestra from 1981. Recordings include symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich.
