The idea that the Western Hemisphere was first peopled by a migration of Asians who reached the New World via a land bridge across the Bering Straits was proposed as early as the 16th century by the Jesuit chronicler Padre Jose de Acosta. had a settled answer: the Clovis people, flooding across the Bering Straits land bridge some 11,500 years ago, down an ice-free corridor in Western Canada, fanning out across the continent and all the way to the tip of South America. They had supposedly migrated across the Bering Straits from Asia in pursuit of mammoths and mastodons, settled in North America, and then moved into South America, still a hunting society and living mainly in the highlands. |
