Berkeley Springs

Town and administrative headquarters of Morgan County in West Virginia, 29 km/18 mi northwest of Martinsburg, on Warm Springs Run, near the Potomac River; population (1990) 700. It has been a health resort since before the Europeans arrived. It is the site of Berkeley Springs State Park, and has sandpits and canning and bottling plants.

During the American Revolution (1775-83), Virginia soldiers bathed their wounds in its warm mineral waters. George Washington, first president of the USA, and his family came here, and in the 19th century the spa, with a large hotel, was an important social centre.
