Berks County

County in southeastern Pennsylvania, in the Piedmont Plateau; area 2,230 sq km/861 sq mi; population (1990 est) 336,500. Its capital is Reading. First settled by Swedish immigrants, it is now an agricultural and industrial area, with manufacturing centred around the city of Reading.

Situated in the fertile Pennsylvania Dutch region, the county is one of Pennsylvania's most important farming centres.
