Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.06 sec.

Berlage, Hendrik Petrus (1856–1934)

Dutch architect who became a leader of the Modern Movement in architecture. After being trained in Switzerland and travelling in Italy, he began practice in Amsterdam in 1889 where his most important building was the Amsterdam Stock Exchange (1897–1903), which greatly influenced subsequent architecture throughout Western Europe. His individualist style marked a move away from 19th-century historicism towards Dutch expressionism.
