Bernard, Louis (1737–1816)

French chemist. He collaborated with Lavoisier, Berthollet, and Fourcroy in writing Methode d'une nomenclature chimique (1787). He also wrote Traité des moyens de désinfecter l'air (1801), which describes the disinfecting powers of chlorine and of hydrogen chloride.

Born at Dijon. He studied law at Dijon University and became a member of the Legislative Assembly (1791). He was also a member of the National Assembly in 1792 and 1795. He was master of the mint (1800–14), and was made a baron in 1811. His publications included many articles in the scientific periodicals of the day.
