Bernard of Menthon, St (923–1008)Christian priest, founder of the hospices for travellers on the Alpine passes that bear his name. The large, heavily built St Bernard dogs, formerly employed to find travellers lost in the snow, were also named after him. He is the patron saint of mountaineers. Canonized in 1115.
