Bernardi, Steffano

    0.09 sec.

Bernardi, Steffano (c. 1585-1636)

Italian priest and composer. Chaplain at Verona Cathedral, he studied in Rome later and became maestro di cappella of the church of the Madonna dei Monti. In 1611 he became maestro di cappella at Verona Cathedral, and in 1622 went into the service of the Archduke Karl Josef, Bishop of Breslau, and soon afterwards to Salzburg Cathedral, which he helped to consecrate in 1628. He wrote a Te Deum for 12 choirs (now lost), and many Masses, motets, psalms, madrigals, and instrumental works. His Salmi concertati deploy voices in different groups, as in the music of Heinrich Schütz and Giovanni Gabrieli.
