Bernardin, Joseph L(ouis) (1928- )

US Catholic prelate. Bernardin was named auxiliary bishop of New Orleans in 1966. He later became general secretary of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) and archbishop of Cincinnati, Ohio. He also served as NCCB president. A progressive, he denounced violence, racism, poverty, and abortion. He was named archbishop of Chicago in 1982, and became a cardinal the next year.
