Prince consort of the Netherlands by marriage to Princess Juliana in 1937. Formerly Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld, he married the only daughter of Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands. When Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940, he escaped to England and became liaison officer for the British and Dutch forces, playing a part in the organization of the Dutch Resistance. He served as a pilot in the Royal Air Force 1942–44 and commander of the Dutch armed forces 1944–45.

He was born in Jena, Germany, the son of Prince Bernhard Casimir.
