Bernoulli's principle |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.03 sec. |
Bernoulli's principleLaw stating that the pressure of a fluid varies inversely with speed, an increase in speed producing a decrease in pressure (such as a drop in hydraulic pressure as the fluid speeds up flowing through a constriction in a pipe) and vice versa. The principle also explains the pressure differences on each surface of an aerofoil, which gives lift to the wing of an aircraft. The principle is named after Swiss mathematician and physicist Daniel Bernoulli. How to thank TFD for its existence? His style is witty, and his presentation is thoughtful, as he clearly explains refraction, the Doppler shift, and Bernoulli's principle. ``We didn't want something like Bernoulli's principle (a law of physics) with five or six permutations,'' Valenti said during a telephone interview from his office in Washington, D. Because according to, Bernoulli's principle, as the flow of a fluid (any liquid or gas) speeds up, its pressure drops. |
