Berrien County

County in southwest Michigan, bounded by Lake Michigan to the west and Indiana to the south; area 1,492 sq km/576 sq mi; population (1990) 161,400. Its capital is St Joseph. In addition to commercial fishing and manufacturing at St Joseph, Niles, and Benton Harbor, the county produces fruit, grain, vegetables, and dairy products, and raises livestock.

The county is drained by the Paw Paw, St Joseph, and Galien rivers. It has several state parks and is the site of the Donald C Cook nuclear power plant (1975), near Rosemary Beach. There are a number of health and lake resorts.
