Berry, Mary Frances (1938- )

US historian, educator, and government official. Berry's career is notable because she is the first African-American woman to become a university chancellor or to hold a position in government in the USA. After a distinguished academic career, Berry became chancellor of the University of Colorado in 1976. In 1977-80, she took leave of absence to serve as assistant secretary for education in the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
