Berry, Mary Frances (1938– )

US historian, educator, and government official. Berry's career is notable because she is the first African-American woman to become a university chancellor or to hold a position in government in the USA. After a distinguished academic career, Berry became chancellor of the University of Colorado in 1976. In 1977–80, she took leave of absence to serve as assistant secretary for education in the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
