Berry, Walter (1929- )

Austrian bass-baritone. He studied in Vienna and sang at the Vienna Staatsoper from 1950 as Mozart's Figaro, Leporello, Wozzeck, and Ochs. He performed at Salzburg from 1952 as Masetto, and sang in the first performances of operas by Liebermann, Egk, and Von Einem. He has appeared at the New York Metropolitan Opera House since 1966 (he made his debut as Barak) and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, from 1976. He was married to the mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig from 1957 to 1970. In 1986 he returned to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as Waldner in Arabella.
