Bertini, Gary (1927-2005)

Russian-born Israeli conductor and composer. He studied in Tel-Aviv, Milan, and Paris, and founded the Israel Chamber Orchestra in 1965. He was guest conductor with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and led the Scottish National Orchestra from 1970, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra 1981-83. He was chief conductor of the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1983, and musical director of the New Israeli Opera from 1994, opening with Boris Godunov. He has conducted the premieres of four operas by Joseph Tal: Ashmedai (Hamburg, 1970), Masada 967 (Jerusalem, 1973), Die Versuchung/The Temptation (Munich, 1977), and Joseph (Tel Aviv, 1995).

concerto for horn, string and timpani (1952), solo violin sonata (1953), ballet The Unfound Door (1962).
