Berwick

Town in east-central Pennsylvania, 24 km/15 mi northwest of Hazleton, on the Susquehanna River; population (1990 est) 11,000. It produces heavy equipment, clothing, metal parts, mobile homes, and other goods. The Susquehanna Nuclear Plant (1982; 1984) is to the east in Luzerne County; adjacent to it is the Riverlands recreation area.

Berwick was founded in 1786 as a Quaker refuge in a farming region, but developed as an industrial centre.
