Bessemer

Industrial city in Jefferson County, Alabama, southeast USA, 25 km/16 mi southwest of Birmingham; population (2000) 29,700. Situated close to rich coal and iron deposits, Bessemer was planned for steel production. Today, chemical and railway-car manufacturing are important. The town is named after Henry Bessemer, the inventor of the Bessemer process of steelmaking.
