Besson, Luc (1959- )

French film director. Known for his stylish, fast-paced, high budget films, he enjoyed popular success with the thriller Subway (1985) and the diving saga Le Grand Bleu/The Big Blue (1988). Subsequent feature films include the thrillers Nikita (1990) and Léon (1994) and the science-fiction action film The Fifth Element (1997). He has also directed documentaries and pop videos. He tells original stories with visual flair and technical virtuosity.

Born in Paris, he worked as an unpaid assistant on international productions such as Moonraker (1979), and directed a number of short films and commercials before his feature debut, the futuristic science-fiction drama Le Dernier Combat/The Last Battle (1983).
