Bethesda

Community in central Maryland, 11 km/7 mi northwest of Washington DC; population (1990 est) 62,900. It takes its name from a Presbyterian church built in 1820. Primarily an affluent residential suburb, from 1935 Bethesda has developed as a major research centre.

It is home to the National Cancer Institute, the National Institutes of Health (1939), the National Naval Medical Center (1942), and the National Library of Medicine (1963). Private research institutes augment those sponsored by the US government.
