Bethlehem

Town in Free State, South Africa, 200 km/124 mi northeast of Bloemfontein; population (district, 1991) 80,900. It is an important grain, wool, and cattle centre for the surrounding agricultural region, and has a large creamery and railway workshops. Bethlehem is also a tourist centre for Lesotho and the Drakensberg Mountains, with important cave painting sites nearby.
