Bethmann Hollweg, Theobald Theodor Friedrich Alfred von (1856–1921)

German politician, imperial chancellor 1909–17. He was largely responsible for engineering popular support for World War I in Germany, but his power was overthrown by a military dictatorship under Erich von Ludendorff and Paul von Hindenburg.
