Betrothal in a Monastery, The

Opera by Prokofiev (libretto by the composer and M Mendelssohn, after Sheridan's play The Duenna); it was composed 1940–41 and first performed at the Kirov Theatre, Leningrad (now St Petersburg), Russia, on 3 November 1946. The story tells how, after initial opposition from their father, Louisa and Ferdinando are allowed to choose their partners in marriage.

This time around we were treated to several performances each of Glinka's Ruslan and Lyudmila, Borodin's Prince Igor, Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa, and Prokofiev's Betrothal in a Monastery, the whole preceeded by a gala performance of selections from these and other operas, including some Italian ones sung in Italian.
