Bettany, Paul

    0.01 sec.

Bettany, Paul (1971– )

English actor. Known initially for his intense and often violent film performances, he went on to prove his versatility in a range of genres. He collaborated with actor Russell Crowe in the drama A Beautiful Mind (2001) and the action adventure Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) and starred opposite Kirsten Dunst in the romantic comedy Wimbledon (2004).

His feature film debut was as a Nazi captain in the World War II drama Bent (1997). He was critically acclaimed for his role as Geoffrey Chaucer in the otherwise poorly received film A Knight's Tale (2001). Other films include the World War II drama The Land Girls (1997), the gritty Gangster No 1 (2000), the historical drama The Reckoning (2001), and Danish director Lars von Trier's experimental film Dogville (2003), opposite Nicole Kidman.

He was born in London, England, and moved to Hertfordshire at the age of nine. He studied acting at London's Drama Centre and worked as a busker before making his theatrical debut in a West End revival of An Inspector Calls. He went on to star in the British television mystery series Wycliffe (1994). He also appeared in the miniseries Coming Home (1998), a period piece based on the novel by Rosamunde Pilcher. He is married to US actor Jennifer Connelly, his co-star in A Beautiful Mind.
