Bettendorf

City in southeastern Iowa, immediately east of Davenport, on the Mississippi River; population (1990) 28,100, of which 96.9% are white. Besides having one of the world's largest sheet aluminium plants, ALCOA, which employs 2,650 workers, it also manufactures oil burners, foundry products, machine tools, farm machinery, and dairy products.

Bettendorf is one of the Quad cities grouped along the Mississippi; the others are Davenport, Iowa, Moline, Illinois, and Rock Island. The land of Bettendorf was purchased from the Sac and Fox Indians in 1832, and the town was incorporated into the USA in 1903. Originally called Lilienthal, then Gilbert, it was renamed Bettendorf after brothers Willian and Joseph Bettendorf who moved their railway construction business from Davenport to the town.
