Beulah

City in west-central North Dakota, 97 km/60 mi northwest of Bismarck, on the Knife River; population (1990) 3,400. The main city of North Dakota's coal country, it is the home of the nation's first coal gasification plant, situated just north of the city, which converts locally mined lignite to gas. Beulah also trades in the region's wheat, corn, poultry, and livestock, and produces dairy goods.
