Bevan, Brian

    0.04 sec.

Bevan, Brian (1924–1991)

Australian-born rugby league winger who spent almost his entire playing career in England. Bevan's total of 796 tries for Warrington, Blackpool Borough, and representative sides 1945–64 is an unequalled record. Lean and almost scrawny in appearance, he was known for speed, swerve, and a characteristic sidestep which enabled him to score many of his tries untouched.

Born into a family that was deeply committed to rugby in Sydney, Bevan had played a handful of games with his father's team, Eastern Suburbs, when World War II began. He joined the Australian Navy and arrived in Britain in 1945. He never played for his native country and almost all his rugby was played in his adopted country. He played for Warrington 1945–62, and Blackpool Borough 1962–64.
