Bevin, Ernest (1881–1951)

British Labour politician. Chief creator of the Transport and General Workers' Union, he was its general secretary 1921–40. He served as minister of labour and national service 1940–45 in Winston Churchill's wartime coalition government, and organized the ‘Bevin boys’, chosen by ballot to work in the coalmines as war service. As foreign secretary in the Labour government 1945–51, he played a leading part in the creation of NATO.

During the war Tom was conscripted to work in the coal mines for four years as a Bevin Boy.
Bevin Boys, the 10% of the male population who did not go to war, played an important role by keeping the coal supply flowing from mines across the region.
Today, he meets Andrew Forte, who helped the war effort by working in the Scottish coal mines after being told he was too weak to be a soldier FORMER Bevin boy Andrew Forte chuckles as he remembers the first day he turned up for work at a Scottish pit to serve his country in World War II.
