Bevis of Hampton

Principal character of an English medieval romance. He journeyed to Ermony (Armenia), where he won the affection of the king, Ermyn, and the love of his daughter Josian. The conquest of Brademond of Damascus, the slaying of a ferocious boar and dragon, and the overthrow of a giant named Ascapart, are among his achievements. He possessed a sword called Morglay and a horse called Arundel, after which he named his castle.

His death after 30 years of domestic happiness took place at the same time as that of his wife and his horse. His story was retold by Michael Drayton in Poly-Olbion.

Bevis of Hampton

Anglo-Norman 13th-century romance. See Buovo d'Antona, the opera by Traetta.

Bevis of Hampton is from the second quarter of the 14th century, and the last of the three belongs to the start of the 15th century.
As Jennifer Fellows shows in tracing the early printed editions of Sir Bevis of Hampton, there is a long history of mocking the romances as frivolous or artistically inept.
Many more examples appear later in Bevis of Hampton, Arthur and Merlin, Guy of Warwick (1), The Seven Sages (1), all from 1330, in Ayenbit of Inwit (1340) and the Midland Prose Psalter (1350).
