Beyers, Christian Frederick

Beyers, Christian Frederick (1869–1914)

South African soldier. He fought on the Boer side in the second South African War (or Boer War) of 1899–1902. Under British rule he was Speaker of the Transvaal House of Assembly in 1906 and in 1910 he became commandant general of the defence force of South Africa. On the outbreak of World War I he resigned and joined Gert Maritz's rebellion against British rule.

Caught trying to cross the Vaal at Greyling on 7 December 1914, he was shot, fell into the river, and drowned.
