Vijayawada

City in Andhra Pradesh state, east-central India; population (1991) 845,300. It is situated 70 km/43 mi from the east coast, at the head of the Krishna delta, a major grain-producing region. An important commercial town, it has long been a centre of communications, linking the interior with the main Chennai–Calcutta route.
