Bharuch

Town and port in Gujarat state, western India; population (1991) 138,300. Situated on the south bank of the Narmada River, 325 km/200 mi north of Mumbai (formerly Bombay), it is one of the oldest seaports in western India, known to be well established in the 1st century AD. It is now a major centre of the cotton industry; other industries include ink and glass manufacture.

Originally known as Barugaza, the port is mentioned by Ptolemy. English and Dutch merchants established themselves here in 1614 and 1617 respectively. The British captured it in 1782 and it was ceded to the East India Company in 1803.
