Biber, Heinrich Ignaz Franz von (1644–1704)

Bohemian composer, virtuoso violinist, and Kapellmeister at the archbishop of Salzburg's court. His brilliant violin technique is best heard in the solo sonatas with continuo of 1681 and the 16 Mystery or Rosary sonatas of 1676. Spatial effects are created in the Vesperae (1693), the Missa Sancti Henrici (1701), and Mass in F minor. He also wrote an opera, Chi la dura, la vince (1687), and the Nightwatchman Serenade.

Church music vespers for voices, strings, and trombones; possibly the 53-part Missa salisburgensis, performed in Salzburg Cathedral in 1682 and formerly attributed to Benevoli.
