biblical criticism

Study of the content and origin of the Bible. Lower or textual criticism is directed towards the recovery of the original text; higher or documentary criticism is concerned with questions of authorship, date, and literary sources; historical criticism seeks to ascertain the actual historical content of the Bible, aided by archaeological discoveries and the ancient history of neighbouring peoples.

What needs recognition is that this theological exposition does not employ the methodology of contemporary biblical scholarship, notably the scholarship espoused by the Catholic Pontifical Biblical Commission, which has made notable strides in employing critical methods in exploring biblical meanings in historical and cultural contexts since the papal decree Divino afflante spiritu in 1943 opened the doors to modern biblical scholarship.
Given how modern liberal and biblical scholarship has ripped open and deconstructed the Bible and the Christian tradition, this call to unity and reintegration of Scripture and of the entire tradition calls us towards a renewed and more mature, yet humble appreciation of Catholic spirituality.
McKenzie of Rhodes College in Memphis said the book does a good job of discussing the Bible's influence on the arts and culture, but he criticized its failure to incorporate the latest biblical scholarship.
