Bickerdyke, ‘Mother’ (1817-1901)

US nurse and humanitarian. When she was widowed, at age 42, Bickerdyke supported herself by practising ‘botanic’ medicine. At the outbreak of the Civil War she worked as a nurse and gave much support to the Sanitary Commission. After the war, she worked for various social service causes.
