Biddeford

City in southwestern Maine, 26 km/16 mi southwest of Portland, at the falls of the Saco River; population (2000) 20,900. The Saco powers lumber and textile mills; other industries produce footwear, machines, tools, and lumber products. The University of New England (1939) is in Biddeford.

Biddeford Pool, a noted 19th-century summer resort, comprises a peninsula and enclosed cove just south of the Saco's mouth.
