Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.03 sec.

Biddle, John (1616-1662)

English preacher, ‘the father of English Unitarianism’. He was banished to the Scilly Isles 1655-58 for preaching against the deity of the Holy Spirit. After the Restoration in 1660 he was again brought to trial for his beliefs concerning the Holy Trinity, and fined. He was unable to pay and was sent to prison, where he died.

His principal works were his Twelve Arguments, etc. (1647), against the deity of the Holy Spirit, and his Confession of Faith Touching the Holy Trinity, etc. (1648), which he followed with a tract bringing the fathers of the church to support him.
