Biedermeier

Early- to mid-19th-century Germanic style of art and furniture design, derogatorily named after Gottlieb Biedermeier, a humorous pseudonym used by several German poets, embodying bourgeois taste.

The Cologne-based artist is known on American shores mostly for watercolors and oils that evoke nineteenth-century German history, folklore, and Biedermeier genre scenes or, in darker moments, the baleful narratives of George Grosz.
Firstly, because the focus of the course is on archetypal human relationships, rather than on the literary and social conventions of the Biedermeier, the fin-de-siecle or the post-war period, the characters of the older texts, stand side by side with those of the contemporary novels.
