Biel

Town in the canton of Bern, northwest Switzerland, 27 km/17 mi northwest of the city of Bern; population (1990) 52,700. Its main industries include watch-making, engineering, and the manufacture of scientific instruments.

Overlooked by the Jura Mountains, it is situated on the Lake of Biel (15 km/9 mi long and 40 sq km/15 sq mi). Gardens and villas surround the town, which is composed of old medieval and new modern quarters. Other industries include cigar-making, tanning, and dyeing.
