Bien Hoa

City of southern Vietnam in Dong Nai province, in the foothills of the southern highlands, 30 km/19 mi northeast of Ho Chi Minh City; population (1998 est) 307,900. One of the oldest cities of the Cochin-China region of the ancient Khmer empire, Bien Hoa lies on the left bank of the Dong Nai River, northeast of the Mekong delta. It produces wood pulp, rolled steel, tractors, tools, and refined sugar.

In the 1960s, an industrial estate was built on the outskirts of the town, with steel, metal-working, and consumer goods industries. This was severely damaged in the Vietnam War, but since 1975, many factories, powered by the Dai Nham hydroelectric station, have been built or re-established. Granite is quarried nearby and the city is served by a large airfield.
