Big Spring

Big Spring

City and administrative headquarters of Howard County, west Texas, 60 km/37 mi northeast of Midland; population (2000) 25,200. Oil refining is the biggest industry, with production of gas, chemicals, and carbon black, though crops and livestock still thrive on the surrounding plains.

Big Spring has a Veterans Administration hospital and rehabilitation centre and several private hospitals. Howard College (1945) is here.

History

White settlement began in 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railway established a division point here. Rapid growth occurred after oil was discovered in the area in the 1920s.
