Biggleswade

Market town in Bedfordshire, England; population (2001) 15,400. It is situated 16 km/10 mi east of Bedford on the right bank of the River Ivel. Market gardening is important here. Biggleswade also manufactures agricultural implements, hosiery, and machine tools. There is a brewery here.

In nearby Shuttleworth, a site of 20 sq km/8 sq mi is used for teaching and research by Cranfield University.

The town grew up around a Roman ford; there is a 14th-century three-arched bridge here.
