Billerica

Town in Middlesex County, northeastern Massachusetts, 11 km/7 mi south of Lowell, on the Shawsheen and Concord rivers; population (1998 est) 39,600. Chiefly agricultural in the past, with mills on the Concord river, there is now some light manufacturing and high-tech industry, as well as the town being a commuter settlement for Boston.

A major employer is the Middlesex House of Correction. It was settled in the 1630s as Shawsheen, one of the ‘Praying Indian’ towns (set aside for American Indians friendly to the colonists). The Middlesex canal runs through the town.
