Billings

City in south-central Montana, USA, on the northern bank of the Yellowstone River; seat of Yellowstone County; population (2000) 91,600. It is the largest city in the state and a centre for the transportation of livestock and animal products; its industries include vegetable and grain processing, and oil-refining. Nearby, to the southeast, is Bighorn American Indian reservation where the Battle of the Little Bighorn took place in 1876. Billings is a gateway to Yellowstone National Park, the largest nature reserve in the USA (established 1872).

Billings was founded in 1882 by the Northern Pacific Railway, and is named after the railroad's president, Frederick K Billings; it was incorporated as a city in 1885. Billings is the seat of Eastern Montana College (1927) and Rocky Mountain College (1878).
